Work Experience in a Creative Agency

Friday, 7 June 2019

After the endless learning curves and opportunities to learn new skills, my work experience within a creative agency is coming to an end.

I first crossed paths with Boomerang Creative while working together on a project for a local client, which led to an offer of work experience within the team. I set myself a few objectives before I started, which were: to gain an understanding of how a creative agency business operates in a real-life industry setting, and also how designers meet a client’s needs with the use of marketing and graphic design.

As a student, I also wanted to strengthen and develop my design skills, learning from those who are already in the industry. Boomerang Creative has exceeded my expectations and made sure that these aims were accomplished.

On the first day of my work experience, I was introduced to the business and how it runs on a day to day basis. I’ve learnt that the company works with a range of successful clients from aspiring Olympic athletes to corporate relocation companies.

For me, the most enjoyable part of my work experience was working in the website development section with Boomerang’s front-end web developer, Tudor. He showed me how many different ways websites can be made, using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I also looked at how specific design components and scaling are used in conjunction to create a professional website.

I learnt how to work in Adobe Illustrator, which was new for me, as I had previously only used Photoshop. Holly, Boomerang’s senior graphic designer, helped me to design a brand identity and reformat images to add to Boomerang’s website portfolio. I also developed a compliment slip, in keeping with Boomerang’s brand consistency, which was a first for me.

Not only has this experience provided me with many new skills, I’ve also gained a real understanding of how a business operates from within. I’m so appreciative that I’ve had the opportunity to work with such a friendly and talented team.
