Search Engine Optimisation – more often referred to as SEO. You may have heard that phrase before, but are not really sure what it means. Or you may have basic knowledge of SEO – but just don’t know where to start with your own website.
So what exactly is SEO? In simple Google terms, it is “the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website, by ensuring that the website appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.” In other words, it’s ensuring that the people who are searching for your product or services end up on your website!
The main player in any SEO strategy is the keywords, or key phrases that users will type into a search engine in order to find what they are looking for. It sounds simple, and it can be if you know what you are doing. There are numerous tools available to assist in producing a list of keywords for you, and many of these work by analysing your competitor’s use of keywords. We use powerful in house tools in the Boomerang office which provide really valuable insight when we compile a list of keywords for our clients.
Once you have your list of keywords, they need to be intricately weaved throughout your website – in the written content, the titles and descriptions of the pages and even in the URLs. It is very easy to get carried away and ‘keyword stuff’ your text – which means you include them far too much so that the text doesn’t read naturally anymore. Google will actually penalise you for this and won’t allow your website to reach its full organic potential in the listings.
Having a blog on your website will really help with your search engine ranking as Google favours websites that regularly update the content. Having a blog and even posting once per month with content that includes some of your keywords will be incredibly beneficial.
Investing time into keywords for your website really is worth it. There’s absolutely no point in having a stunning and effective website that sells your product or services well, if nobody can find it!
